Lead Carbon Battery

What is a Lead Carbon Battery?

Lead Carbon Batteries are a relatively new and significant battery energy storage technology that “evolved” from the lead acid batteries used in cars for over 100 years. Right off the bat, this makes which makes Lead Carbon Batteries easy to understand and maintain.

Scientists and researchers in electrochemical energy storage learned that by adding a small amount of carbon to the traditional lead-acid battery, that they can significantly increase the lifespan of the Lead Carbon Batteries.

Lead Carbon Batteries are "deep cycle" and can completely re-charge from 4 to 10 times faster than regular lead acid batteries (LAB).

Lead Carbon Batteries successfully integrates the "high energy density" of the lead carbon battery with the high specific power of supercapacitors.

The problems with the >100 year old lead-acid batteries, is that during the discharge cycle - sulfuric acid within the LAB reacts
with the lead anode and cathode which creates lead sulfate. The process reverses during battery re-charging. This conversion produces a short, powerful burst of energy (jump-starting a car). Over time, Lead Acid Batteries lose their charge due to a gradual crystallization and buildup of lead sulfate within the battery's core. The corrosive acid within lead acid batteries corrode and dissolve the lead acid battery's core.

As previously mentioned, scientists determined that through the addition of carbon to a battery - as in Lead Carbon Batteries - this eliminates or greatly reduces the crystallization from taking place within the Lead Carbon Batteries, thereby greatly improving the life and lifespan of Lead Carbon Batteries over lead-acid batteries.

Researchers and scientists at the Department of Energy have determined that the Lead Carbon Battery technology has the potential for storing renewable energy generated at solar power parks and wind farms. The DOE scientists stating in their report that Lead Carbon Batteries - when Lead Carbon Batteries are "banked in a Battery Energy Storage (BES) or "Bulk Energy Storage" system, that this could serve as a viable back-up source for power at utility-scale solar and wind power plants "because of their concentrated power."

Additionally, the problems relating to renewable energy generation, particularly from solar power plants and wind power generation facilities, is that many times the power produced is not needed at the time it is generated. Lead Carbon Batteries - when integrated in a Battery Energy Storage (BES) or "Bulk Energy Storage" system, can discharge the power at the time it is needed, thereby making "dispatchable wind" a reality, at last!

What is Battery Energy Storage?

Battery Energy Storage and Battery Energy Storage systems (BESS) use stored electrical power in batteries, and feed this energy to the electric grid (building, or facility) at times when it makes economic sense. 

For a "Net Zero Energy" building or facility, a Solar Cogeneration, or Solar Trigeneration energy system is used that stores excess solar power in the Battery Energy Storage system during the daytime, for use when the sun goes down, and during inclement weather.

Battery Energy Storage is an ideal solution for utility-scale wind farms, particularly in Texas, when most of the renewable energy is generated at night when the power isn't needed. 

Battery Energy Storage is a leading "dispatchable wind" solution making wind power available 24 x 7.  

And, Battery Energy Storage is an ideal demand side management, peak shifting or load leveling solution as well as reducing emissions

According to Sandia Labs in their report titled; "Energy Storage for the Electricity Grid; Benefits and Market Potential Assessment Guide" (February 2010), the market for energy storage exceeds $100 billion during the next ten years.
